July Update β€” Review Scores, Grub Roulette & Menu Prices

  • updates
  • release

Last month was all about making the site feel like yours. This month is about telling you more about the places on it β€” and having a bit of fun while we're at it.

Reviews from everywhere, in one place

Venue pages now pull in review scores from Google, TripAdvisor, Just Eat, and Deliveroo where we have them. Instead of opening four tabs to work out whether somewhere's any good, you get the ratings side by side on the one page.

We're filling these in over time, so not every venue has them yet β€” but the coverage will keep growing.

Behind the scenes we've also been researching how each of these companies actually scores a venue, and bringing that into our own data collection and analysis. The goal is to build our own score β€” an objective read on a restaurant, with personal preference either kept out of it or clearly flagged. More on that soon.

Grub Roulette

The Surprise me dice has had a glow-up and a new name: say hello to Grub Roulette. It still picks a random venue from whatever filters you've got set β€” but now, once we've got enough opening-hours data to trust it, it leans towards somewhere that's actually open right now. No more being sent to a chippy that shut an hour ago.

And if your filters are so specific that nothing matches? Instead of the button quietly doing nothing, you'll get a little nudge to loosen things up.

Menu prices β€” Preview

Venue pages now have a Menu highlights section β€” a few popular dishes with their prices, cheapest first, with a friendly reminder that prices may vary. It's the first step towards something we're genuinely excited about: letting you compare venues by what a plate of chips actually costs.

It's a brand-new feature and we're still adding prices venue by venue, so treat it as an early preview β€” the more we fill in, the more useful it gets.

Little fixes

  • Venues that are both a restaurant and a takeaway now show the right icon on the map.
  • The green visited tick now stays put on your visited venues even when you're zoomed right out.
  • Sorted a few menus and dropdowns that were hiding behind other bits of the page.
  • The "βœ“ Visited" button now shows the correct state again for signed-in users.

What's next

A few things we're working on for next month:

  • Save your places β€” signed-in visitors will be able to bookmark venues you love (or want to try) and jump back to them in one tap.
  • Better data underneath β€” we're filling in opening hours and dish prices across more venues, so the open-now bits (like Grub Roulette) get genuinely reliable and Menu highlights covers more places.
  • Our own score β€” as mentioned above, we've started the groundwork on an objective venue score. Early days, but it's the foundation for proper user reviews further down the line, once there are enough of you to make them count.

No promises on exact timing β€” these land when they're ready.
